Although there are other dental treatments for missing teeth, including dentures, dental implants are a popular choice for replacing a missing tooth. Unlike
removable dentures, dental implants become integrated with the jawbone providing a longer-lasting solution.
Some reasons to choose the placement of a dental implant and restoration to replace a missing tooth include:
:: The space left by missing teeth can cause other teeth to shift, potentially causing additional dental problems.
:: A missing tooth can detract from your overall smile.
:: Because the tooth's root is missing, your jawbone can lose strength and possibly deteriorate.
:: Missing teeth can make everyday activities, like eating and speaking, more difficult.
The process for placing a dental implant is longer than other typical dental treatments; however, this lengthy process is needed in order for the implant to properly set into the jaw and replicate the role of the missing tooth.
During an implant dentistry procedure at either the Fresno or Madera practice of Ideal Smile Dentistry, Dr. Mudassar:
:: Prepares the area where the dental implant will be placed. (This may include removal of any remaining part of the tooth or root.)
:: Implants a titanium post into the jaw to act as the new root for the tooth.
:: Places a temporary restoration over the dental implant during the healing process.
:: Waits for the jaw to heal around the implanted post, which can take three to six months.
:: Affixes a custom dental restoration on the dental implant to replace the missing tooth or teeth.
If only one tooth is being replaced during the implant dentistry treatment, a
dental crown is typically used are the dental restoration affixed to the dental implant. The crown will act as the tooth that it replaced. In cases of several missing tooth, a dental implant may be the base for a
dental bridge or
dentures. During your dental implant consultation, Dr. Mudassar will discuss which type of restoration will be used for your treatment.
